An infrared sauna is a type of sauna that uses light to allow your body to generate heat. Traditional steam saunas use conventional heat to heat the air around you whereas an infrared sauna uses light to warm your body and induce sweating. Infrared saunas are able to function at a much lower temperature and provide great results. Not only does this provide a safer experience, it is also easier to tolerate than a traditional steam sauna.
At Preferred Care, we have invested in a three person sauna but only allow one individual in at a time in order to provide maximal space and comfort.
The health benefits of regular and even one-time sauna use are expansive. Recent studies have shown a correlation in sauna use and improved cardiovascular performance and decreased risk of several chronic conditions. We invite you to read further about the benefits below.
What are the benefits?
- Detoxify
- High levels of heat induce sweating which can allow the body to get rid of nickel, lead, copper, zinc, and mercury.
- Deep sweating can flush out bacteria from the pores and upper layers of the skin.
- Relaxation
- High levels of heat release endorphins in the body similar to that of working out. Endorphins are associated with decreased pain, decreased stress, and improved mood.
- Decreased Stress
- Sitting in a warm, quiet space can allow for relaxation which decreases overall stress levels of the body. High stress is correlated to significant risk for development of chronic health concerns.
- Deeper Sleep
- Higher body temperature during the day will help to decrease body temperature at night which facilitates sleep.
- Cardiac Benefits
- Heat helps to dilate your blood vessels which increases blood flow and accelerates the natural healing of your body.
- Heart rates can increase up to 200% while in the sauna which is comparable to moderate exercise.
- Burns Calories
- “A moderately conditioned person can easily sweat off 500 grams in a single session of the sauna, consuming nearly 300 calories in the process” (Dean, W.)
- Increased cardiac activity leads to increased calorie consumption of the body.
- Illness Prevention
- Increased heat allows the body to rapidly increase the number of white blood cells that are present in the body. White blood cells are important in fighting off illness and killing viruses.
- The heat that is generated in a sauna can help decrease nasal congestion.
- Comfort
- Heat helps to relax your muscles by decreasing the tension of your muscles and decreasing lactic acid which can lead to muscle soreness.
- Sitting in a sauna can feel comforting with increased levels of heat.
